Bird Control and the Law: Why Proofing Is the Right Route
All wild birds in the UK — including feral pigeons and gulls — are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It’s an offence to intentionally kill or injure them, or to damage or destroy an active nest, except under strict licence conditions. That’s why professional, responsible bird control focuses on non-lethal proofing and exclusion: legally sound, more humane, and far more effective long-term. Lethal control is a tightly restricted last resort requiring the correct licensing, not a first move — and rarely necessary when proofing is done properly.
